A “Moyen” Poodle is a size classification of the Poodle breed that is not universally recognized but is quite popular in some regions, particularly in Europe. The term “moyen” comes from the French word meaning “medium.” In Germany, they are known as Klein poodles. This size falls between the Miniature Poodle and the Standard Poodle, making it essentially a medium-sized Poodle.
In looking at Aussiedoodle puppies, you may run across Moyen Aussiedoodles or Medium Aussiedoodles, ones that are the offspring of a Moyen Poodle and a Miniature Australian Shepherd (also known as a Miniature American Shepherd). Although it’s most common to see three sizes of Aussiedoodles listed, this fourth size is offered by some breeders.
Characteristics of Moyen Poodles
- Size: Moyen Poodles generally stand about 15 to 20 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 20 and 35 pounds.
- Temperament: They share the same intelligent, friendly, and active temperament typical of Poodles. This makes them excellent family pets and companions.
- Coat: Like other Poodles, Moyens have a curly, hypoallergenic coat that requires regular grooming. They come in a variety of colors.
- Health: Moyen Poodles are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they’re prone to certain health conditions. It’s important to maintain regular veterinary check-ups.
- Training and Socialization: They are highly intelligent and trainable, excelling in obedience and agility sports. Early socialization and training are recommended to ensure they grow into well-adjusted adults.
While the Moyen Poodle is recognized in the United States by the United Kennel Club (UKC), it is not recognized as a separate size by the American Kennel Club (AKC). In the AKC, Poodles are categorized simply as Toy, Miniature, and Standard.
In Europe, the Moyen Poodle is more widely recognized and is a popular size.
Have You Seen Moyen Aussiedoodles?
The Moyen Poodle is becoming increasingly popular due to its manageable size–and with that popularity you’ll probably soon see more Moyen Aussiedoodles. This size fits into a unique niche for those who prefer a dog larger than a Miniature but smaller than a Standard. This size can be particularly appealing for families or individuals living in smaller homes or apartments but still wanting an active and engaging pet.
